It's an active player, and its circulation is slowing down. We should be treating the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) slowdown as the climate emergency it is, not just a footnote to temperature records.

Why We Focus on Temperature Instead of Circulation

It's understandable why public discourse fixates on temperature. It's simple, it's measurable, and it's what people feel. But climatology has always been about more than temperature—it's about the slow-acting influences like ocean circulation and long-term variations in solar radiation (Britannica / Climatology). The AMOC is one of those influences, and it's been quietly destabilizing. NOAA and University of Maryland scientists found that the AMOC remained stable from 1955 to 1994, but then declined in strength and speed in the last two decades, due to ocean surface warming and salinity changes (NOAA NCEI / AMOC study). That's not a minor detail. That's a shift in a system that circulates water within the Atlantic, bringing warm water north and cold water south.

The AMOC Is More Than Just a Current—It's a Lifeline

What Practitioners Actually Do Differently

In our work, we don't just track temperatures; we track the ocean's vital signs. We measure salinity, density, and current speeds. If we keep framing climate change solely as a temperature issue, we'll miss the slow-motion heart attack happening in the Atlantic. The AMOC slowdown is a clear warning that we need to understand and respond to the full complexity of the Earth system. As practitioners, we're not just watching temperatures rise; we're watching the ocean's circulation falter. That's the story we need to tell, and the action we need to take.
